What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive photo-rejuvenation treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to treat specific skin conditions. It emits intense, short bursts of light onto a targeted area without damaging the surrounding tissue. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin which is responsible for skin pigment so it reduces superficial brown marks like freckles and sunspots. It is also absorbed by the haemoglobin in the red blood cells in the blood vessels to treat vascular problems (broken capillaries). It can also repair damaged collagen in the dermis.

What to Expect

Topical Numbing Cream: No, but a cooling gel is applied to lower the temperature of the skin during treatment to minimize discomfort

Sensation: Mild sting of an elastic band and a flash of bright light with heat but fleeting sensation. Minimal discomfort but depends on tolerance levels.

Side Effects: Redness, mild sensitivity & inflammation – lasts between 12-24 hours. Ruddy complexion for up to 5 days post-treatment. Occasionally purpura (purple coloured spots) which can last 7-10 days.

Caution: Darker skin types risk blistering and pigmentation if wrong settings are used. Make sure your laser operator is experienced.

Post-IPL Tips

• Use a mild cleanser and hydrating products as the skin will be dry
• Avoid heat-inducing exercise especially if vascularity (blood vessels) were treated
• If the skin is uncomfortably hot, use a cold compress
• Dryness due to a temporarily disrupted skin barrier can be minimized by using a rich post-peel skin barrier repair cream until the barrier normalises
• No active ingredients like Retinol or AHAs for at least 5-7 days post-treatment
• Avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week after the peel and use a high-factor, broad-spectrum sunscreen if you need to be outdoors
