Lifestyle stresses, and hormonal and environmental factors all play a role in the development of acne, especially in adult women.
Up to 40% of adult women may experience acne.
The clinical appearances of this type of acne are quite characteristic in that there are often multiple, deep, inflammatory lesions along the jawline and chin. For reasons that are not clear, the lesions often affect an inverted V extending from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin. The lesions are often painful and have the potential to produce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as well as scarring.
This condition is extremely frustrating in adult women as they often see the first signs of photo-ageing appearing – in other words, fine lines and wrinkles as well as breakouts!
What are some of the causes?
Hormonal
All acne is hormonally-linked but there are often flare-ups when pre-menstrual, during pregnancy, or during perimenopause and menopause. On stopping the oral contraceptive pill, acne will often flare.
Genetic or Hereditary Factors
More severe, persistent forms of acne are often inherited from one of the parents.
Medication Side-Effect
Progesterone is taken either orally, by intramuscular injection, via an implant under the skin, or progesterone released from an intrauterine device may all trigger or make acne worse. Oral, as well as topical corticosteroids, can also trigger acne. Similarly, oral mood stabilisers such as Lithium and Lamotrigine can also make acne worse.
Stress and Lack of Sleep
Research has shown that there is a relationship between increased stress, a lack of sleep and acne flare-ups.
Diet
Excessive intake of dairy products and refined sugars has been shown to make acne worse.
Incorrect Skincare Product
Using thick, rich, and greasy moisturisers and sunscreens on the face and body can cause breakouts.
Environmental Factors
Factors such as air pollution and dust can also negatively impact acne-prone skin.
