Advice for Treating Unexpected Breakouts

  • June 2, 2023
  • Learn, SOS

Unexpected breakouts refer to the sudden appearance of acne or pimples on the face or body. It is not uncommon for pesky inflammatory lesions to appear every month, especially in women in time with their menstrual cycle. These breakouts can occur unexpectedly, catching individuals off guard, and are sometimes unrelated to known triggers like hormonal changes or skincare routines.

Factors that can contribute to unexpected breakouts

  • Exposure to pollutants, dirt, and other irritants in the environment can clog pores and lead to breakouts
  • Increased stress levels can trigger hormonal changes that may contribute to acne formation
  • Consuming certain foods, particularly those high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats, may exacerbate breakouts in some individuals
  • The use of certain skincare products that are too harsh or comedogenic (pore-clogging) can lead to breakouts
  • Changes in climate, humidity, or exposure to different water sources during travel may affect the skin and lead to breakouts
  • While unexpected breakouts are not typically related to regular hormonal changes, certain medications or underlying health conditions may cause hormonal imbalances that contribute to acne
  • Inconsistent or improper skincare routines can lead to a buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria, increasing the likelihood of breakouts

Breakouts vary in appearance based on acne type and severity

  • Whiteheads are closed, small, flesh-coloured bumps
  • Blackheads have open pores and are dark due to oxidation
  • Papules are red, raised, and tender
  • Pustules are red with pus. Nodules are large, solid, painful bumps
  • Cysts are severe, pus-filled, and may cause scarring

Treatment tips that can help with unexpected breakouts

  • Use a mildly foaming cleanser to prevent dead skin cell build-up
  • In women, start with a targeted spot treatment a few days before the onset of the menstrual cycle and continue with the targeted treatment until the breakout has healed
  • Resist the urge to pick or squeeze the breakouts, as this can worsen inflammation and lead to scarring
  • Apply spot treatments containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid directly to the affected areas to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria
  • Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores
  • Avoid using heavy makeup or comedogenic skincare products that may contribute to clogged pores
  • Consider using topical retinoids to help unclog pores and promote skin cell turnover
  • Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from further damage and prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Try stress-reduction techniques like meditation, exercise, or deep breathing, as stress can exacerbate breakouts
  • Pay attention to any potential triggers like certain foods, skincare products, or environmental factors that may be contributing to the breakouts

Skincare ingredients that can help with unexpected breakouts

  • Licorice Extract
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Azelaic Acid
  • Green Tea Extract
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Witch Hazel
  • Retinol (Vitamin A)
  • Bisabolol

Skincare products that can help with unexpected breakouts

Skincare products specifically formulated for treating breakouts often contain active ingredients that can help reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and unclog pores, addressing the underlying causes of breakouts. Dr Webster Recommends:

  • MartiDerm Acniover Purifying Gel
  • SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.3
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Gel Cream SPF 50+
  • pHformula SPOT ON Blemish Active
  • Hyaestic Spot Treatment 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Avène SPF 50 Cleanance Cream
