This guide can be adapted depending on your skin type, concerns, and individual skin objectives, but it simply aims to provide a baseline understanding of the order in which you should apply your skincare products.
You could also have a very simple routine that may not include all of the listed products, and that is totally fine – each person can differ in their product types and preferences.
Tips for applying products in the most effective order
- Start with lighter formulations first (i.e. toners, essences, serums)
- Follow with heavier formulations (i.e. creams and masks)
- Sunscreens, BB creams, and make-up should go last
- Seek professional and personalised advice before purchasing a full skincare routine
- Start with the basics, then add to your routine once your skin is happy (i.e. cleanser, serums, an AM/PM moisturiser, and, of course, a skin type-appropriate sunscreen)
- Finding a skin type-appropriate cleanser is key, and you may find that you need two – a milder one like micellar water for mornings, and a slightly deeper cleansing option for the evening
Morning skincare routine example
- Cleanse / Micellar Water
- Tone or Essence
- Serums / Targeted Treatment
- Eye Cream
- Creams / Moisturisers
- Sunscreen
- Setting Mist or Spray
Evening skincare order example
- Pre-cleanse
- Cleanse
- Exfoliator / Mask
- Serums / Targeted Treatment
- Eye / Neck Cream
- Creams / Moisturisers
Once you have the basics right, it’s all about finding the routine that works best for you. Certain ingredients and product types, like retinols and exfoliators, can only be used one to three times per week. Some nights, you may want to follow a minimal routine and give your skin a break by applying only a barrier cream. This concept is something we call Skin Sponding, which is essentially about knowing your skin and its needs well enough to respond to it accordingly.
