Skin Care Travel Essentials

  • June 27, 2016
  • Learn, Skincare Routines

We’ve all been there, standing over our already over-loaded suitcase trying to figure out HOW ON EARTH we are going to fit our vanity bag in between the extreme scenario planning of swimsuits and puffer jackets, without our product bottles breaking or leaking.

And then there is the question of how much product we really need. Which products lend themselves best to scenarios A B or C (Airplane, Beach or City sightseeing?).  This can all be stressful and time-consuming, so we’ve come up with a few tips we thought might help make your planning easier.

But before we do that, our best single piece of advice when planning a trip is to look for products that can do more than one thing. When you travel, you need products that can multitask. Micellar water is one of these fabulous inventions, it can remove makeup and cleanse skin faster than the Shinkansen Bullet Train. A BB cream is another winner, it provides sun protection, and light coverage and the good ones will help with hydration, too.

Tips for Keeping Your Skin Checked-In whilst Travelling

Cleansing

For before, during and after a long-haul flight, keep the Mustela Dermo Soothing Wipes in your carry-on and give your skin a good wipe down using gauze or cotton wool pads. Another option for a quick pick-me-up is pre-soaked, non-rinse antioxidant pads, we’ve had excellent feedback from our customers about the travel friendliness of the Exuviance Skin Rise Bionic Tonic Pads.

Light Coverage

Try to avoid wearing heavy makeup on flights or when on the road or rail –  rather use a BB cream which gives light coverage and find one that preferably contains an SPF.

Lips & Hands

Don’t forget your lips and hands – travel with a soothing lip balm like pHformula’s SOS Lip Rescue or a hydrating hand cream like pHformula’s hand cream. Better yet, a deeply hydrating multi-tasker that is super affordable and can comfortably handle both jobs is the SBR Repair Cream – just look at those reviews!

Moisturising

Make use of a moisturizer that is richer than your usual kind if you have inherently dry skin – flights and changing climates can dehydrate travel-weary skin and you may need to apply it more regularly than usual. NeoStrata Bionic Face Cream is a safe and great option.

Hyaluronic Acid

Might be the travel buddy ingredient you can find to keep skin plumped out and smooth in changing environments. Lamelle HA Plus is a lightweight option that is in a plastic airless pump and is also carry-on friendly.

Antioxidants

Use an Antioxidant Serum to fend off pollution when amongst dregs heavy transport – buses, planes, taxis, tuk-tuks, scooters. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is our top-selling and top-performing option.

Sun Protection

Don’t forget your broad-spectrum, high-factor sunscreen, especially if you’re not going with the built-in BB Cream option. Remember, even if it’s an overcast day, your skin is still at risk and requires protection. Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-free SPF 50 is one of the few SPF products available that covers all four spectrums of skin-damaging light. In addition, it contains antioxidants = have we mentioned multi-tasking is a thing?

Extra Travel tips for optimum comfort & health:

  • Get some eye drops for dry, scratchy eyes.
  • Saline Nasal Spray helps keep nasal passages moist and reduces the risk of viruses in contained spaces.
  • Waterless hand wash or sanitiser keeps hands clean and bacteria-free.
  • Fisherman’s Friend is a potent throat lozenge to protect the throat – another entry point for viruses.
  • Water – a lack of water causes general dehydration but one of the first places it will show is on your skin. Take a bottle of filtered water with you and keep it topped up with good clean water throughout our trip.

Dr Webster’s Expert Tip

“We all know that pressurised recycled air can be drying and can cause dehydration of the skin, which ultimately leads to moisture loss and possibly a compromised skin barrier function. This can make the skin more sensitive, reactive and vulnerable. Fine lines and wrinkles appear more pronounced and general skin health can deteriorate. Skin is also very sensitive to climate and environmental changes and may need extra support”

Finally and very importantly, when passing through airport security screening: Each liquid you carry must be in a container of no more than 100ml. All liquids should be carried in single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bags (Ziplock) or similar for easy checking.

Bon Voyage!
