Visible changes in your nails can be caused by internal factors such as the ageing process, systemic diseases, medications and systemic skin diseases such as psoriasis.
Local factors such as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, trauma and fungal infection will also alter the appearance of one’s nails.
Changes in the nail to look out for:
- Onycholysis is where the nail plate becomes detached from the nail bed creating a space below the nail plate. This can be due to many reasons including trauma, overuse of chemicals, a systemic illness or fungal infection
- Thickening of the nail plate with a yellowish brown discolouration. This may be due to psoriasis or a fungal infection
- Green colour below the nail plate almost always is caused by a Pseudomonas bacteria infection
- A dark spot below one’s nail could be a sign of bleeding or rarely it could be caused by a malignant melanoma below the nail plate. Therefore if a dark spot persists for any length of time consult your local medical practitioner
Treatment tips for optimum nail health
- Water exposure can weaken nails, causing them to become soft and prone to breakage. Constant wet work can increase the risk of fungal infections of the skin around the nails and of the nail plate itself.
- Always use preferably latex-free gloves when immersing your hands in water while doing domestic tasks
- Apply a moisturising hand and nail cream regularly to keep them healthy and hydrated
- The cuticle serves as a delicate shield for the proximal nail plate. It is generally recommended not to push back one’s cuticle at all however if it is required, you can do so gently with your fingernail in a warm shower while the skin is soft
- Cut your toenails after a bath or foot soaking when they are softer and more flexible. Cut the toenail straight across as rounded edges can result in ingrown toenails
- Always file your nails in the same direction
- Avoid prolonged use of gel or acrylic overlays
- Opt for using an acetone-free nail polish remover as it is less damaging
- It is a good idea to consult your Dermatologist if you notice any nail changes that concern you
- If you notice an ingrown toenail it is best to have a professional assist you to avoid trauma and infection
