Azelaic Acid is a type of dicarboxylic acid that is found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley. It is also produced by Malassezia furfur, a yeast that is present on normal skin. This versatile ingredient has various actions such as keratolytic, comedolytic, anti-inflammatory and tyrosinase inhibitor. It helps to reduce inflammation in mild to moderate acne, and its keratolytic action exfoliates the skin, preventing comedone formation. Additionally, it aids in pigmentation by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme that controls the production of melanin. Azelaic acid is also helpful in reducing inflammation in rosacea.
