Dimethicone is a type of silicone which is widely used in cosmetics, hair care and skin care. It is an occlusive agent that has a dual action in the skin to keep moisture in and aggressors out. It forms a physical layer over the skin that helps to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) from the surface of the skin and it also helps to protect the skin from external aggressors such as irritants and toxins.
